The door to their hotel room opened and slammed shut so hard, the floor vibrated.

Dawn had returned from her stint by the pool. She expected it. The ominous dark clouds that dominated the sky since they arrived were now just a thick layer of gray as far as the eye could see and with it, light rain began to pour. The way the trees crashed into themselves made her uneasy, so violent. Are they supposed to be able to bend that far to the side like that, she wondered.

Dawn stationed herself back at the table.

“There’s a really bad storm headed this way,” she said from the bed.

Dawn barely looked in her direction. “We’re in a hotel. We’ll be fine.”

A knock at the door startled her. “I ordered dinner. You hungry?”

“I’m fine.”

A young man in an all-white uniform strolled in with a tray. He ran through her order and lifted the lid to confirm.

“It’s all here. Thanks, she said, handing him a ten dollar bill.

“Enjoy he said, almost bowing.

The smell of the bean soup wafted up her senses. It all smelled very good. The food might be good enough to give back a star if she reviewed the place.

She served herself and climbed onto the bed to eat. She changed the channel and ended up on the local news.

“Tropical storm Debra is now a category 1 hurricane and it is picking up speed as it makes its way through the Atlantic, the weather woman said in a mix between an English and Caribbean accent. “It may not be powerful, but it is slow and it is bringing a whole lot of rain. Flooding is the biggest concern. Stay in, stay safe. Debra is set to hit land by nightfall.”

Dawn didn’t seem too worried at all as she typed away on her laptop.

“The food is gonna get cold.”

“I’m not hungry. Lower the volume a bit please.”

Kelsey turned off the television and entertained herself with Instagram and then went on to Facebook which she hadn’t visited in some time.

The food was even better than she thought. Perhaps all the money went into paying the chef.

It was too good, which prompted her to overeat. She took Dawn’s portion and ate everything until her stomach ached. She felt like her stomach would burst.

The feeling overwhelmed her. She got up, trudged herself to the bathroom and locked it. She hovered over the toilet and shoved her finger down her throat until most of what she had consumed was floating in the water.

She flushed, found her toothbrush in her little hygiene bag and brushed. After a quick shower she changed into her pajamas. It was only seven, but she was so bored. It was painful in fact, to have Dawn there and still feel like she wasn’t at all.

Without another word to her wife, she slid under the covers and closed her eyes hoping the night would pass quickly and this storm would pass with it.

Sleep never came, hard as she tried. She stared out mindlessly at the window behind Dawn.
